I studied Yogananda’s two year Kriya Yoga course in the mid 60’s as a late teenager. I never met him when he was living. During my last lesson and when I was sitting in deep gratitude and peace, I heard him laugh and sing the “Oh God Beautiful hymn. When I opened my eyes, there was only me sitting in my meditation space. When I had a chance to listen to a tape of him singing (included in this CD) I got goosebumps because it was really His Spirit Blessing Me – another new student in his program. This CD is an awesome collection of his gentle and kind presence which he shared with the world back in the late 1940s. His prayers, songs and words are clearly a collection of many recordings no longer available. I am so Thankful this was available on Amazon.

The more I listen to this remarkable recording, the more it touches my heart and lifts my spirit.
In his heavily accented but crisp and charming English, Paramahansaji reads these prayers with much power and energy, making this CD a soul stirring experience. After most of the prayers, there is a chant, and though his singing voice isn’t “pretty” or “perfect”, it’s a commanding sound that after 3 or 4 hearings will light a flame in your spirit.
To quote the liner notes: “Those who join in the thought and feeling with Paramahansa Yogananda will find that listening to these chants and prayers imbues the heart with deep spiritual peace and an awareness of the Divine Presence”.
These chants were recorded during impromptu gatherings, and have been re-mastered from the original 78 r.p.m. records. They did an excellent job, as the sound is clear and quite good.
Paramahansa Yogananda plays the harmonium (a small, hand-operated reed organ) on these chants, and other accompaniment includes the mridanga (a long drum of clay and wood), and kartal (a pair of flat hand cymbals).
The booklet insert is exceptional, and includes complete text of the prayers and chants, and also a translation of the Bengali (of which there is a transliteration) when applicable, and there is one chant in Hindi, with translation.
There is one instrumental, recorded in 1947, which is an arrangement of Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Song of India”, and has pianist/conductor Antonia Brico playing the harmonium, and Paramahansa Yogananda on the tablas (a set of two drums). Dr. Brico, subject of the documentary “Antonia, Portrait of the Woman”, was a musical pioneer of extraordinary achievement, so it’s a treat to hear her as part of this collection.
Total playing time for this CD is 69:17, and as this is an unusual recording, I recommend hearing it several times before fully evaluating it.
This is a wonderful CD for followers of the Self-Realization Fellowship teachings, and as Paramahansaji said, “Chanting with ever-increasing devotion brings God-communion and ecstatic joy, and through these healing of body, mind and soul”.

When I opened my eyes, there was only me sitting in my meditation space. When I had a chance to listen to a tape of him singing (included in this CD) I got goosebumps because it was really His Spirit Blessing Me – another new student in his program.
After most of the prayers, there is a chant, and though his singing voice isn’t “pretty” or “perfect”, it’s a commanding sound that after 3 or 4 hearings will light a flame in your spirit.
