Holt Cook was never meant to be a dragon rider. He has always served the Order Hall of the Crag dutifully, keeping their kitchen pots clean.

Until he discovers a dark secret: dragons do not tolerate weakness among their kin, killing the young they deem flawed. Moved by pity, Holt defies the Order, rescues a doomed egg and vows to protect the blind dragon within.

But the Scourge is rising. Undead hordes roam the land, spreading the blight and leaving destruction in their wake. The dragon riders are being slaughtered and betrayal lurks in the shadows.

Holt has one chance to survive. He must cultivate the mysterious power of his dragon’s magical core. A unique energy which may tip the balance in the battles to come and prove to the world that a servant is worthy after all.

The start of a new dragon rider epic combining the best of Eragon with the hard magic of Brandon Sanderson and Will Wight. Fans of Christopher Paolini, Ryan Cahill and Phillip C. Quaintrell are sure to love this series.

This is a really easy read, but without the trappings of many YA novels – in other words, the plot isn’t dictated by teenage angst. Your expectations for this book should be an enjoyable, easy to read story that isn’t complex or epic in nature.

This is certainly a family friendly story, and the audiobook was very well done.

I really enjoyed this take on the dragon rider trope. Instead of a farm boy unknowingly bonding with a dragon egg that was stolen from the evil empire… you have a boy who can’t bring himself to let an egg be destroyed simply because the dragon inside is known to be crippled. There’s no empire here to fight against and the fate of the world doesn’t rest on their shoulders. Just a boy who thinks it’s wrong to destroy the eggs of crippled dragons. He can’t change the world, he can’t save all the eggs, but on this day he can save this one egg. And that’s how our story begins, nothing grand or epic. Just a kid following his heart and doing what he believes to be right.

Naturally, from there the story does evolve to where they are battling to “save the world.” But there are consequences, both good and bad, to a boy who isn’t supposed to be a dragon rider becoming one to a dragon who wasn’t supposed to live. But kicking off the story with an act of kindness and not an act of rebellion sets the tone for the rest of the book and separates this book from all the other dragon rider stories out there.

In some ways this felt a bit like progression fantasy due to strength being acquired in leaps when faced with some kind of a challenge. I haven’t enjoyed other progression fantasies I’ve read, but I thought this was well done and it didn’t feel like strength was given to him too easily.

The one thing I would have liked to have seen is more challenges related to having a blind dragon. It does get talked about a lot, and there are moments where being blind does impede him, but I felt this was one part that was too easy. I would have liked to see bigger/lasting consequences and have the dragon clearly starting further behind other newly hatched dragons.

Very well done. Interesting plot, good character development, lots of action bit emotional moments, too. I took to our main character on the spot, we Dragon lovers understand perfectly what moves him to do what he did. Yes, the onset reminded of the Dragon Riders of Pern, but that’s were the similarities end. This realm is unique and amazingly well done. Very well written! And it’s a really long book, much time to have fun reading! Without any lengths to it, just good story to go on and on. One of the ten books I really would like to give six stars if possible.
Can’t wait for the next book.

I read Ascendant, was charmed by the story, the characters, the action. I just had to read the sequels which turned out to be just as good. I highly recommend this book and the others in the series. A great read!

A commoner kitchen boy makes an impracticably rash decision to steal and save a dragon egg. In doing so, his life changes irrevocably, bringing chaos where order reigned supreme. Circumstances force him to travel with a princess who would rather kill him, and a mentor whom they both need. To survive, Holt and his dragon Ash will need to grow in strength and power as quickly as possible.

I’m a fan of the good old peasant to hero cliche, so the kitchen boy turned dragon plot line was enjoyable, if predictable. I also like dragon rider/dragon bond stories, so that was another plus. While those were fun and cliched plot lines, the characters, world building, and magic system were nicely fleshed out in an original manner, making this a fresh and original read.

The magic system is a mix of cultivation and traditional dragon rider bond magic, taking the best from both. I enjoyed the complex relationship between Talia, the princess, and Holt, the kitchen boy. They didn’t become friends overnight, and even once they did, like any real friendship, it had its ups and downs and needed to be worked on.

Additionally, it wasn’t only the humans who had all the character development. Almost every dragon had their own voices, their own relationships with each other and with Holt.

The plot wasn’t simple either. There are some politics, betrayals, and secrets nicely interwoven throughout. It was a good magical character journey with the promise of more to come.

This story has a lot of heart to it, showing struggles of all the different components that can be thrown into one’s life making the sharp borders of right and wrong more as blurred borders and making choices even harder. It shows heart wrenching emotional ties to dragons and other humans and how choices have consequences and some severe, as life changing, world changing consequences. There’s also society and politics galore, mostly the back-stabbing, traitorous kind and how people can turn on those around them, smiling while all the while thrusting the knife to end your life. It shows how fickle people are. The dynamic hero celebrated for saving their lives one day, and yet the next day becomes the traitorous thief who needs locked up or banished for his deeds. These two young young riders learning the impossibility of having to choose between family or their dragon rider oath. Yet, they’re forced over and over to make these choices and to live with the consequences.
It’s a really great story. I’m excited to see where their paths will lead them next. I find Rake to be a very mysterious character and I’m certainly looking forward to what he’s going to bring to the story.
This is a new author for me but I’m impressed with his writing skills and his ability to: set the scenes, detail the characters, effectively relay the emotions of the situations and lay down the story in a practical way and with an elegant style that makes reading a true pleasure. He’s earned a new fan. 👍❤️😉

I can’t wait to start the second Songs of Chaos -book because this first one was absolutely fantastic! The fantasy world Miller has created is refreshingly imaginative and his characters have such depth. The book was very well edited and the storyline is suitable for both young and adults – easy to follow, but keeps you hooked.

I really loved this book. All characters are so well defined. The dragons are just as one would imagine,(all of them) but Ash is definitely wonderful. His whole personality is beautiful, funny, cute and sad. Holt is as I would have been in his situation. The relationships are also well defined and deep, friends or foe. This book is so well written I could see everything described.I actually was taken into this incredible world and felt everything. Joy, laughter, wonder, beauty, terror, sadness and love. I even could feel for the antagonists. I even cried, which I don’t do. It’s been a long time since a book has taken me so completely out of my world and away from my own struggles. MRM for a wonderful journey I can’t wait to read the rest of the series. I just know I will be sad when I’ve read the last page

I quite enjoyed the series thus far. Enough to reread the entire series for the 4th book that is now out. It is admittedly a bit troupey with the heros journey, but probably one of the better writen “heros journey” stories I’ve read and frankly I dont get tired of the heros journey anyway. The story keeps moving and isnt quite as dry as many similar books, the parallel to Eragon being the obvious, but certainly less dry in many ways and has a slightly more sophisticated writing style even though its probably aimed for young adults. Over all its a great read and you should give it a try

Ascendant, book one in Michael R. Miller’s Songs of Chaos series, is a great introduction to dragons or new and veteran readers alike.

A unique energy which may tip the balance in the battles to come, and prove to the world that a servant is worthy after all.

I don’t think I’ll ever not love a dragon story and this is no exception. I’ve heard a lot about this series so when Michael asked if I would accept copies of the currently released books I jumped at the chance. This has been on my TBR for a long time and I’m glad to finally open the pages and start this incredible journey.

Miller knows that this is a story filled with classic tropes but this doesn’t take away from the enjoyment of experiencing a traditionally-inspired tale and mixing it with progression fantasy. You might be able to find similarities to other stories however Ascendant was such a brilliant read that I plan to continue the rest of the series straightaway. Described as YA, the reach of Ascendant is far greater and, much like I say for Mistborn, this marks a great beginning for adults also who want to make a start on dragon fantasy. Miller’s easy prose and well-described characters, balanced with a nostalgic story, mark this as a truly fulfilling read.

I particularly enjoyed how Miller wrote the relationship between Holt and Ash, and how cooking is a prevalent part in working out these dragons. Cooking can determine the abilities/roles of a dragon and it reminded me of status effects in RPG games. Currently playing through Zelda and mixing different foods to have different effects is similar to this. Miller writes a great dynamic between dragon and rider. By having Ash be blind, Miller has created a deeper way of bonding these characters and how this is shown throughout the novel is outstanding. We really see how this bond reflects on the characters and how this affects the relationship, compared to other characters who are not limited.

Ascendant is an enjoyable start to this series and is an accessible entry for readers who want to have an entertaining read but also a startling journey in dragon rider fantasy.

Ascendant (Songs of Chaos Book 1) is an exciting fantasy novel that begins the Songs of Chaos series. The story follows a young character who unexpectedly becomes part of a much bigger adventure involving dragons, magic, and powerful enemies. As the journey begins, the character must learn courage, responsibility, and how to face difficult challenges.
The world-building in the book is rich and imaginative, with detailed settings and an interesting magic system. One of the most enjoyable parts is the bond between humans and dragons, which adds excitement and emotion to the story. The action scenes and character growth keep readers interested from start to finish.

Ascendant The epic build-up, the haunting vocals it’s like the soundtrack to a fantasy epic. Loving how it sets the tone for the Songs of Chaos series. The production quality is top-notch, with layers of sound that draw you in. Can’t wait for the next track! What do you think of the lyrics

I also like dragon rider/dragon bond stories, so that was another plus. While those were fun and cliched plot lines, the characters, world building, and magic system were nicely fleshed out in an original manner, making this a fresh and original read.

“Ascendant” feels like a quiet rise turned into sound — the kind of track that doesn’t rush to impress, but slowly pulls you in and lifts you higher with every moment. The atmosphere is rich and immersive, blending emotion with a sense of growth and transformation.
What stands out most is the progression. The song builds in layers, starting subtly and evolving into something powerful and almost cinematic. It captures that feeling of becoming something more — stronger, clearer, and more confident — without needing to be overly loud or dramatic
