Normally, I’m a big of Kim Vogel Sawyer so I was disappointed to find I did not enjoy “Song of My Heart.” I like the character of Sadie and even the secondary characters of Melva, Shelva and Asa perfected a colourful backdrop. However, I ended up skipping large sections because the plot dragged so much. Sadie’s inner turmoil over the situation that she’s in could have been handled better. I grew impatient with her continual refusal to be completely honest with everyone in her life. She agonised over her decisions but I couldn’t garner up sympathy for her plight. She came to Goldtree primarily to work in the mercantile. The singing and the money she earned doing it were a pleasant and appreciated bonus. In my opinion her choice was obvious and she should have been able to make it with a clean conscience knowing that she was still sending home the money that she had arrived in Goldtree to earn at the mercantile.
Thad is likeable as the reluctant sheriff but his investigation into the illegal dealings took forever to get going and then it stalled once too often. I think that the plot was too drawn out to retain the reader’s attention. It had the makings of fantastic storyline but ultimately, it failed. Had it been a bit more succinct in it’s narrative, it would have been a great book. Unfortunately, it missed the mark. I would not recommend this one to a friend without first qualifying that it was quite slow in places.

When Sadie Wagner has to leave home in order to support her family, it’s like throwing a lamb to the wolves. For the sake of her mother, siblings and bedridden dad, she has no choice. Her “cousin” has written saying he has found her two jobs, one working at a mercantile and another, her lifelong dream, singing in an opera house. Reluctantly Sadie waves goodbye to her family and takes a journey that will lead an innocent girl down questionable paths.
Arriving in Goldtree she meets the lively mercantile twins, whom she can’t tell apart and is quickly woven into their lives. Also into the life of the twin’s brother Asa, who leads a double life. Sadie meets Sheriff Thad McKane who sweeps her off her feet only to find her cousin is trying to stake a claim on her too.
Soon Sadie is working and singing, sending money back home to her desperate family. Her happiness soon turns to dismay and she has to make some choices that will change her life. Take the journey with Sadie to see where she lands, there are many twists, turns and surprises.

Especially now that her step-father, who is the only father Sadie has known, was hurt in an accident and cannot work Sadie knows someone has to get a job soon, so when she receives a letter from her favorite cousin Sid telling her he has a job for her in Goldtree, Kansas working as a clerk in Baxter’s Mercantile and also maybe as a singer in the local opera house; she sees this as a blessing from the Lord. After Sadie’s mama and papa pray about it they give her permission to go.
When Sadie arrives in Goldtree, she is greeted by Sid who is really excited to see her, for reasons Sadie will soon be shocked to find out. When Sadie is introduced to the tall, matronly identical twin sisters, Shelva and Melva Baxter, that own the mercantile, she is not sure she will be able to get used to their loud obnoxious ways but she knows she has to try for her family’s sake.
Sadie feels so blest when Asa Baxter, short, soft spoken younger brother of Shelva and Melva, tells her she has the job singing in his unconventional “opera house”. She cannot believe the amount of money he is going to pay her for using her God given talent. When Asa asks Sadie to do things that go against her Christian upbringing, will she be able to resist?
The one bright spot in Sadie’s lonely life away from her family is Thaddeus “Thad” McKane the new Sheriff of Goldtree. Thad has been hired because there are rumors of bootleggers being in the area. Thad’s abuse by his father as a child because of alcoholism makes him more determined than most would be to find the person responsible for the bootlegging. Will Thad and Sadie’s friendship develop into something more or will Sadie be persuaded to do things that might destroy their love and worse yet land her in jail?!
This was a very enjoyable read by Kim Vogel Sawyer; she does a wonderful job weaving a story that holds your attention to the very end. I promise you will love every word of it, I know I did.

I was excited to receive Song of My Heart by Kim Vogel Sawyer to review. Kim is one of my favorite authors and I have collected all of her books.
Sadie Wagner, loves her God, her family, and singing. When her stepfather is injured in a mining accident she is willing to find a job to help replace the lost income and support her family. When her cousin, Sid, sends a letter about a job at the mercantile and the possibility of singing in the new Opera House in Goldtree, Kansas, she shares it with her parents. After her parents seek God’s guidance in prayer they give their blessing.
The idea of leaving her home and family behind in Dalton, Indiana is a bit scary, but she is also excited about the opportunity to help her family.
Sadie is a character that the reader will immediately like. She is kind, friendly, a hard worker and she, like many of us, struggles with doing the right thing. Sadie works at the mercantile, for twin sisters, Melva and Shelva, and at the opera house which is situated under the mercantile, for the sisters’ brother, Asa. Sadie enjoys working at the mercantile and singing in the opera house, but when Asa asks her to sing an extra night, compromising her beliefs by singing seductive songs for an all male crowd, and to wear “a bawdy dress”. She refuses at first, even though she is threatened with losing her singing job. But when she thinks about the lost income to sent home to her family, she forgets to trust God and tries to do things in her own strength.
Thad McKane, is the newly hired sheriff and is still getting to know the people of Goldtree. He plans to only work as a sheriff until he saves the money train to be a preacher. His first priority, though, is to find the bootlegging operation, shut it down and bring the offenders to justice. The only problem is that he thinks Sadie may be involved in some way.
Sid Wagner is Sadie’s stepfather’s nephew, but Sadie has always thought of him as her cousin and cannot see him any other way. Although she is grateful that Sid let her know about the job and to have a family member close by. Sid is also employed by Asa Baxter, driving the freight wagon.
Identical twin sisters, Melva and Shelva are very likable. They can be loud at times, but they love Sadie like a mother would. I think you will find them entertaining like I did. But, their brother Asa, I consider to be a snake, who only cares about his own interests.
The story flowed well, and I enjoyed it a lot. I think you will as well, whether you are new to Kim Vogel Sawyer’s books, or are a long time fan.
I give Song of My Heart 5 out of 5 stars.
