It’s clear that not everyone “gets” Thomas Ligotti, even those who claim to be voracious readers of the weird and the bizarre. Of course, those expecting the bloody hatchet style and substance of King or Barker need to look elsewhere, or they will ultimately be disappointed. At his best, Ligotti’s style is anachronistic, with a hint of modernism here or there–just enough to tip the reader’s sense of balance as to time or location. He invokes the spirit of Lovecraft, but in equal measure, M.R. James, Algernon Blackwood, Arthur Machen, and William S. Burroughs. The comparison is valid, but if it is possible, his stories are even more bleak, and one wonders if he is actually writing to entertain, or to impart his asserted philosophy (yes, he’s written a philosophy book as well) of anti-natalism. His desire seems not to “scare,” but to shake the reader to the core at an existential level, which is the realm of the truly terrifying.

Yet another noteworthy tale is his foray into the medeival sorcery in “Masquerade of a Dead Sword: A Tragedie.” Ligotti evokes magic at its darkest as the protagonist Faliol, an assasin for hire with a curious need to constantly wear spectacles made from the blackest glass, attempts to solve the riddle of how he became a monster. Along the way he encounters jackboot thugs, a young man in need of assitance regarding a princess, and a truth more terrible that he could hope to conceive regarding his origins. This is not Tolkien, by any means.
“Songs” is a brilliant first compilation by someone developing a truly unique, truly disturbing style. If your penchant is for blood and guts horror, then choose another path. If you have a penchant for the philosophy of subtle dread and the truly disturbing, Ligotti is your author.

This a dark collection that gave me bad feelings (in a good way) at times. Ligotti is an amazingly talented writer, and his ability to create a mood for a story is unlike anything I’ve encountered before. There were a few duds in this collection, but this seems like a good place to dive in to Ligotti’s work. I look forward to exploring more in the near future.
